The topography mixes coral gardens, walls, drift sites and cave systems across a wide depth range, suiting beginners and intermediate divers alike. Napoleon Wrasse, Whitetip Reef Shark and sea turtles are observed across the reefs, alongside a dense community of parrotfish, angelfish and surgeonfish. All sites are reached by boat.

The overall species list is remarkably broad, with parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish adding colour across virtually every site.
A large proportion of sites are rated beginner level, including Playground, Wayne's World and Briggs Reef, all offering shallow reef tops alongside deeper options on the same dive. Several sites also accommodate snorkellers, so non-divers in a group are well catered for. Intermediate sites like The Whale and Wildside are available once divers are ready to progress.
Norman Reef has the greatest number of sites and the widest variety of topography, from drift dives at Table Top to the cave and wall system at Magic Wall. Milln Reef offers more technical wall diving at sites like Cucumber Alley. Hastings Reef and Moore Reef are well protected and better suited to calmer conditions, while Michaelmas Cay and Upolu Cay are primarily shallow snorkel destinations.
Every site in the region is accessed by boat. Operators including Reef Magic, Ocean Freedom, Great Adventures and Down Under Diving run day trips to the outer reefs. Aquatica Dive Resort, Fitzroy Island Dive Centre and others provide options for those wanting a more dedicated dive-focused trip. There is no shore access to any of the outer reef sites.
