Michaelmas Cay is a protected coral cay situated roughly forty kilometres from Cairns in the Coral Sea, reached by boat only. The site offers a mix of reef flat, wall, and drop-off topography, with depths ranging from the surface to around twenty-four metres. Conditions are generally calm in the sheltered lagoon sections but currents can run strong along the western wall, which is better suited to intermediate divers. The cay itself is a protected seabird nesting site, and beach access is restricted to specific areas. Napoleon wrasse, bluespotted fantail rays, coral trout, and several parrotfish species are regularly encountered.
