North Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan country where all diving takes place in freshwater lakes and cave systems. The main draw is Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, where sites range from shallow beginner reefs to an underwater archaeological site at the Bay of Bones, remnants of a prehistoric stilt-house settlement. Vrelo cave in Matka Canyon near Skopje adds a technical dimension, reaching extraordinary depths and requiring cave and technical certifications. Dive operators are based in Ohrid and Struga, and the lake's surface warms considerably in late summer while temperatures below the thermocline stay cold year-round.
