Georgia's diving is centred on the Black Sea coast, where the country's sole site in our database, Kvariati near Batumi, offers a shore entry across natural and artificial reef structures at moderate depths. The Black Sea is chemically unusual, with deep anoxic layers that preserve shipwrecks and a thermocline that brings cooler water below mid-depth. Surface temperatures peak in late summer and drop considerably through winter and spring, so a wetsuit suitable for cold water is advisable outside the summer months. Species recorded at Kvariati include scorpionfish, gurnard, stargazer, peacock blenny, gorgonians, and brittle stars, giving a representative sample of Black Sea reef life.
