Mayotte's underwater character is shaped by a large lagoon system that spans from shallow seagrass and reef flats to deep drift passes and a remote submerged atoll. The four sub-areas offer markedly different experiences: N'Gouja's shore-accessible reef and seagrass beds suit beginners and snorkellers seeking Green Sea Turtle encounters, while Passe en S delivers strong-current drift dives along walls and drop-offs for intermediate and advanced divers. Îlots Choizil hosts calm, boat-access reef snorkelling around white sand islets, and Banc du Geyser is a serious offshore dive on a reef that drops to considerable depth. The Moorish Idol is recorded across every site, and nudibranchs, including the Chromodoris Nudibranch and Nembrotha Nudibranch, appear with striking regularity. Indian Lionfish, Lagoon Triggerfish, and Pacific Trumpetfish round out a reef fish community backed by multiple observed scorpionfish species.

Water stays warm throughout the year, peaking in the austral autumn months of March to May and cooling slightly through the mid-year period before rising again toward December. The cooler months of July through September still offer comfortable conditions but can bring stronger current activity in the passes, making drift sites like Passe en S and Passe Saziley more demanding. April and November emerge as the standout months, combining settled conditions with good visibility across the lagoon.

Intermediate and advanced divers are catered for by the drift passes at Passe en S and Passe Saziley, where strong currents and drop-off topography require more experience. Banc du Geyser, the remote submerged atoll, is the most committing site and best suited to experienced divers comfortable with open-water boat trips.
N'Gouja in the south is the most accessible area, with shore-entry sites on reef and seagrass that suit snorkellers and beginner divers alike. Passe en S is centred on drift diving along walls and drop-offs and is better suited to those with current experience. Îlots Choizil offers boat-access reef snorkelling around white sand islets in the north, while Banc du Geyser is a single, remote offshore site that descends to very significant depth and requires a dedicated boat excursion.
It depends on which sites you plan to visit. N'Gouja and Plage Gouéla are shore-entry sites that do not require a boat, making them convenient for independent access. Most other sites, including the drift passes and the islet reefs of Îlots Choizil, are boat-access only.
