Christmas Island sits in the Indian Ocean, roughly three hundred and fifty kilometres south of Java, and its underwater terrain reflects that isolation. Steep walls drop from shallow reef into very deep water, and the two sites currently in Fin's database, Perpendicular Wall and the Eidsvold Wreck, show the range on offer: a vertical reef structure with moderate currents and visibility up to thirty metres, and a beginner-friendly wreck that has become an artificial reef down to eighteen metres. Water temperature stays warm throughout the year, peaking around late summer and easing slightly in the cooler dry season from May to October. Whale sharks, multiple shark species, turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and gorgonians have all been recorded at the island's sites.
