Mission Beach and the Family Islands lie in the Coral Sea in Far North Queensland, offering some of the closest mainland access to the Outer Great Barrier Reef and thereby keeping transit times short. Boat charters depart from the region for offshore sites, while several islands and bays allow shore entry into shallow reef, seagrass, and wall habitats. Flora Reef delivers deep wall and cave diving with visibility reaching well into the tens of metres, whereas Family Island Group and Dunk Island sites suit beginners in shallow, generally calm water. Water temperatures stay warm throughout the year, peaking in the wet season months and easing back in mid-winter. The species list includes whale shark, whitetip and blacktip reef shark, Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, pygmy seahorse, and green sea turtle. Divers should note that marine stingers are present from November to May.
