The Townsville Outer Reefs spread across a chain of distinct reef systems, each with its own character. Coral gardens, walls, canyons, pinnacles and a penetration wreck sit alongside an artificial reef bearing large underwater sculptures at John Brewer Reef. The majority of sites suit beginners, though deeper walls and the Gothenburg Wreck step up the challenge. Common Coral Trout, Flagtail Triggerfish and Pacific Bullethead Parrotfish are seen across almost every site, while Napoleon Wrasse, Queensland Grouper, Whitetip Reef Shark and Reef Manta Ray appear regularly.

John Brewer Reef is home to Coral Greenhouse, an artificial reef with large-scale underwater sculptures in a sheltered lagoon. The Gothenburg Wreck sub-area at Old Reef provides the only dedicated wreck diving, including penetration options.
All sites across the Townsville Outer Reefs are accessed by boat; there are no shore entries. Operators serving the region include Pleasure Divers Magnetic Island. Because the reefs sit well offshore, planning around a liveaboard or day-boat departure is essential.
