Old Reef lies in the Coral Sea off Townsville and combines living reef with the historic wreck of the SS Gothenburg, making it one of the few sites in the area where divers can move between coral topography and wreck penetration in a single trip. The reef itself suits intermediate divers, while the Gothenburg wreck, which drops to thirty metres, requires advanced certification. Both sites are boat-access only. Water is warm year-round, peaking in the wet season and cooling slightly through the dry winter months. Species recorded here include whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, pygmy seahorse, whale shark, and gorgonians.
