The South is a freshwater diving and snorkelling region built almost entirely around lakes, reservoirs, and quarries. Artificial reefs and submerged wrecks dominate the site mix, with purpose-sunk boats, planes, and vehicles providing structure across sub-areas including Logan Martin Lake, Summersville Lake, Wheeler Lake, and Barren River Lake. The region skews strongly towards beginners, with most sites offering shore entry and shallow-to-moderate depths. Freshwater species such as Blue Gill, Channel Catfish, Carp, Perch, and Livebearer are consistently observed, while the Georgia Aquarium adds a controlled indoor dive experience unlike anything else in the region.

The vast majority of sites are freshwater, so you are more likely to encounter species such as Blue Gill, Channel Catfish, Carp, Perch, Livebearer, and Common Carp than anything saltwater. The Georgia Aquarium is the exception, where observation-backed sightings have included Tiger Shark and Whale Shark in a controlled indoor setting. Paddlefish and Crayfish have also been recorded across the region.
The region is well suited to beginners. The majority of top sites, including Blue Water Park, Gray Quarry, Bellevue Quarry, and Chesterfrost Park, are rated for beginner skill levels with shore entry and no significant currents. A smaller number of sites such as Mermet Springs, Indian Head Rock, and Pepper's Ferry are rated intermediate, offering more varied topography for those with more experience.
Logan Martin Lake has the largest concentration of sites and includes purpose-built dive parks such as Blue Water Park and Dive Land Park, both focused on artificial reefs and training. Summersville Lake and Barren River Lake offer a more natural lake setting, while Land Between the Lakes hosts quarry-style sites like Cerulean Springs and Mermet Springs with wrecks and deeper artificial structures. Eastern Kentucky Lakes and Grenada Lake round out the region with smaller clusters of freshwater sites.
Shore entry is by far the most common access method across The South, which makes the region very practical for independent divers. Almost all of the top-rated sites, including Gray Quarry, Blue Springs, Madison Quarry, and Bellevue Quarry, are shore-entry. Boat access is less common but does feature at sites such as Indian Head Rock in Summersville Lake.
