Flower Garden Banks sits in the Gulf of Mexico, roughly a hundred miles offshore from Freeport and Galveston, Texas. These salt-dome reefs are the northernmost coral reefs on the North American continental shelf, and that distinction shapes everything about diving here. The six sites in our database range from shallow reef caps to deep pinnacles and a freighter wreck, covering depths from a few metres down to over sixty. All access is by boat or liveaboard, and conditions suit intermediate to advanced divers. Visibility is consistently good, and the warm summer months bring whale shark sightings, while gorgonians, nurse sharks, goliath grouper, and sea turtles are recorded across the sanctuary year-round.

Monthly water temperature across Flower Garden Banks's sites, from satellite sea-surface data corrected for depth. The band shows the site-to-site spread.
Water temperatures follow a clear seasonal pattern: cool in winter and early spring, climbing steadily through summer to their warmest in late summer and early autumn. Summer is the season for whale shark encounters. Winter diving is possible but cooler water and rougher offshore conditions mean liveaboard logistics require more planning.
