The Family Islands lie in the Coral Sea off Mission Beach in Queensland's Cairns region, near the town of Tully. Reefs here are shallow, ranging from the surface down to moderate recreational depth, and are accessible by both shore and boat. Visibility is typically good, and currents are generally mild, though wind, tide, and current direction should be monitored. Warm tropical water temperatures persist year-round, peaking in the wet season and easing slightly during the dry months. Recorded species include whitetip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, green sea turtles, pygmy seahorses, and mourning and pharaoh cuttlefish.
