Phuket's dive sites span a broad range of underwater terrain: reef systems, vertical walls, pinnacles, drift sites, and several artificial structures. The sub-areas each have a distinct character. Koh Racha Noi draws experienced divers with deeper drifts and strong currents alongside beginner-friendly bays. Koh Racha Yai offers calmer, shallower reef diving. The King Cruiser Wreck and Anemone Reef add variety close to the mainland. Signature species include the Giant Moray, Pharaoh Cuttlefish, Indian Lionfish, and the elusive Robust Ghost Pipefish. The Porcupinefish and Moorish Idol are reliably seen across almost all sites. Calm months bring the clearest conditions, while the wetter season sees reduced visibility and stronger swells.

Koh Racha Noi has a wider range of topography including deep walls, drift sites, and pinnacles, and caters to both entry-level divers in its sheltered bays and advanced divers at exposed sites like Purple Garden. Both sub-areas are accessed by boat.
Phuket's site mix goes well beyond simple reef diving. The King Cruiser Wreck sub-area provides wreck diving, while Shark Point and several sites at Koh Racha Noi offer pinnacle and wall topography. Drift diving is available at sites such as Purple Garden and Paradise Deep Rock. A number of sites also incorporate artificial reef structures alongside the natural terrain.
