Old Crow and the Porcupine River in the Yukon offer an unusual mix of subarctic freshwater and shallow coastal sites. Workboat Passage, a drift site in the shallow strait between Herschel Island and the Yukon mainland, runs extremely cold with temperatures near or below freezing for much of the year. River sites on the Porcupine and Old Crow rivers are shallow, often silty, and demand experience with strong currents. Old Crow River is specifically noted for underwater fossil prospecting, where Pleistocene remains of mammoth, horse, and bison have been found on shallow point bars. Fish Lake in the Old Crow Flats provides a calmer freshwater option for less experienced snorkellers.
