Diving in Interior Alaska

Interior Alaska's dive sites are freshwater lakes and ponds concentrated near Fairbanks and managed largely by state and borough parks authorities. Sites are shallow, with depths reaching nine metres at most, and entry is typically from the shore or by boat. Birch Lake, Tanana Lakes, and Tanana Lake offer calm conditions suited to beginners working on buoyancy and navigation, with a submerged wreck at Tanana Lakes providing a focal point. Summit Lake is subject to ice cover from late autumn through spring, which defines the usable season for that site. Visibility and temperatures vary between sites and seasons, and adequate thermal protection is necessary throughout the year.
