K'gari sits off the Queensland coast and its dive sites span both ocean and freshwater. Hervey Bay offers wreck and artificial reef diving for intermediate divers, with tidal currents managed by timing dives at slack tide and visibility that can be limited. Lake McKenzie is a shallow freshwater perched lake on the island itself, suited to snorkelling and beginner dives but supporting minimal aquatic life due to its slightly acidic chemistry. The SS Maheno wreck is a historic vessel in the surf zone but is prohibited to dive due to dangerous surf, sharp metal, and instability. Ocean water temperatures are warmest from late spring through summer and coolest in winter. Recorded marine species include green sea turtles, whale sharks, grey nurse sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and wobbegong.
