Fitzroy Reef is part of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, accessed by boat from the nearest town of Campbellton. Its two sites offer quite different experiences: Fitzroy Reef Lagoon is a shallow, sheltered beginner site with consistent visibility, while Heron Bommie reaches considerable depth and suits intermediate divers comfortable with moderate currents. The reef structure provides natural protection from swell. Species recorded include whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, whale sharks, green sea turtles, peacock mantis shrimp, pharaoh cuttlefish, and bottlenose dolphins. Water is warmest in late summer and coolest through the mid-winter months.
