Snorkelling in Frankland Islands

The Frankland Islands are a small group of reefs in the Coral Sea, reached by boat from rivers near Babinda south of Cairns. The key site is Normanby Island, a shallow reef suitable for beginners with depths from the surface to modest recreational depth. Visibility can vary, tightening during the wet season when river runoff affects the water, and improving during the dry months. Currents are generally mild and can allow for drift snorkelling at times. Green sea turtles, titan triggerfish, giant clams, and various parrotfish and wrasses are among the recorded species.
