The Shasta-Cascade Lakes region in Northern California groups three distinct freshwater sites near Mount Shasta and Redding. Castle Lake in Siskiyou County is a cold, still lake with visibility reaching up to thirty metres and no current, making it well suited for buoyancy practice. Lake Siskiyou offers an artificial reef in shallower water with moderate visibility. Whiskeytown Lake is an artificial reef site with a marked thermocline and colder layers below the surface. All three are shore dives rated for beginners. The water is cold year-round at depth across all sites, and a drysuit or substantial wetsuit is recommended regardless of season. Species include trout, brown trout, brook charr, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, freshwater jellyfish, and sturgeon.
