San Juan del Sur sits on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, and its dive sites reflect the character of that ocean. Water temperatures here are noticeably cooler than on the Caribbean side, dropping into the low-to-mid twenties Celsius during the early months of the year before rising through the warmer season. The two sites in our database, La Paloma and La Flor, cover reef, pinnacle, and drift formats, with depths suited to both beginners and intermediate divers. Species recorded include whitetip reef sharks, silvertip sharks, marble rays, Pacific cownose rays, whale sharks, giant frogfish, and several turtle species. Currents can be strong at La Paloma, and visibility is variable depending on conditions.
