Laguna de Apoyo is a freshwater volcanic crater lake near Catarina, and it offers a freshwater diving experience that is quite distinct from coastal diving in Nicaragua. The single site in our database covers both natural and artificial reef structures, with a depth range that extends well beyond typical recreational limits, though the site is graded for beginners at shallower levels. Water stays warm throughout the year, warmed in part by geothermal activity, and currents are mild. Freshwater species recorded here include perch, tilapia, catfish, and livebearers. Shore and boat entry are both available, though motorised boats are prohibited on the lake.
