Reykjavík's two dive sites, Vidhey and Gullkistuvik, sit in the North Atlantic off the southwest coast and cover kelp forest and reef terrain from shallow to thirty metres. The kelp at Vidhey gives way to open reef with depth, while Gullkistuvik is a reef descending to the mid-twenties in metres with generally calm conditions. Species recorded across both sites include harbour seal, monkfish, lumpfish, bobtail squid, blue shark, John Dory, dogfish, and skate. Water temperatures are cold in every month, peaking in late summer. Seven operators are based in or near the city, making Reykjavík the most practical base for exploring Icelandic diving.
