The east coast of Moorea faces the Society Islands' inner waters and offers a wide range of dive and snorkel experiences within a short distance of Tahiti. Sites range from shallow lagoon reefs and shore snorkelling spots barely a metre deep to boat-access drift dives through passes with strong currents and walls dropping to around twenty metres. Blacktip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, and green sea turtles appear regularly across the area. Water stays warm throughout the year, making a light wetsuit sufficient in the cooler months. Five operators run trips from the east coast, and sites suit everyone from first-time snorkellers to intermediate divers comfortable with current.

Water is warm year-round, peaking in late summer and easing slightly through the austral winter without ever becoming cold. The dry season from May to October brings the most stable weather and generally the best visibility, which can reach thirty metres at sites such as Temae. Humpback whales are present in the broader Moorea area from August through October, as French Polynesian waters are designated a Marine Mammal Sanctuary.
