Orpheus Island lies within the Palm Island group on the Great Barrier Reef, and diving here centres on the channel between Pelorus and Orpheus Islands. A strong tidal current runs through that channel, making drift diving the defining style at this location and pitching it at intermediate divers rather than beginners. Entry is possible from shore or by boat, with sites ranging from fringing reef to wall terrain. Water is warmest in summer and cools through the mid-year winter months. The island is also a departure point for visiting the Museum of Underwater Art.
