Lake Ouachita is Arkansas's largest lake, set in forested mountain terrain and offering freshwater diving across a varied spread of sites. Divers explore submerged rocky areas near islands, a vertical wall at Blakely Mountain Dam, and an abandoned barite mine known as the Blue Hole. Visibility improves markedly near the dam and clearer eastern reaches of the lake, while a thermocline typically develops between mid and upper depths, causing significant temperature drops below the surface layer. Boat access is required to reach the island and offshore sites, and the lake draws a steady flow of training divers.
