Mangalia sits on the southeastern Romanian coast where the Black Sea meets a stretch of shoreline that combines natural reef, artificial reef, and wreck diving within easy reach of shore. All four sites in our database are accessed directly from the beach, making the area well suited to beginners. Depths across the sites run from very shallow to around twenty metres, and a pronounced thermocline below ten to fifteen metres means water that feels warm in summer near the surface can drop sharply underneath. Visibility is variable and wind-dependent, generally sitting between five and fifteen metres, and the preferred season runs from early summer through to early autumn when the water reaches its warmest at the surface.

Surface temperatures rise through summer, peaking in late summer before cooling steadily through autumn and into a cold winter. Below the thermocline, temperatures can drop considerably even during the warmest months, so a thicker wetsuit layer is worth carrying regardless of season. Outside summer, the water is cold throughout the water column and conditions are more exposed.
