Desecheo Island sits roughly nineteen kilometres off Puerto Rico's west coast in the Mona Passage and is accessible only by boat. The underwater topography is varied, taking in reefs, walls, drop-offs, caves, and a wreck across a depth range from shallow to around thirty-five metres. Visibility is among the best available in western Puerto Rico, frequently reaching into the upper thirties of metres. Landing on the island is prohibited, but the surrounding waters are open to divers. Species recorded include nurse sharks, whale sharks, green sea turtles, Ridley turtles, Atlantic goliath grouper, gorgonians, and common octopus. Caves and the wreck involve overhead environments, so appropriate experience is needed for those sections.
