Vamizi Island sits in the northern Mozambique Channel as part of the Quirimbas Archipelago, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is protected on its western side by the community-managed Vamizi Community Sanctuary. The reefs here support over forty-six genera of coral and more than four hundred species of fish, and the island holds one of the last known grey reef shark populations in Mozambique. Sites range from shallow beginner-friendly reefs and caverns to walls and drift dives descending past forty metres, with visibility regularly reaching thirty metres. Seasonal visitors include humpback whales and whale sharks, and the calmest conditions with clearest water tend to fall between September and November.
