Madagascar's East Coast diving is based around Sainte-Marie (Île Sainte-Marie), accessed from the town of Ambodifotatra. The two sites in our database, Il Balenottero and Le Lémurien Palmé, are both reef dives suited to intermediate divers, with boat entry required for at least one. Water temperatures on the Indian Ocean side range from the mid-twenties in July through August to the high twenties during January through March. The region is noted for humpback whale and southern right whale sightings during the breeding season, and the species list recorded at local sites includes robust ghost pipefish, painted frogfish, bluespotted fantail rays, and Napoleon wrasse.
