Kells Bay faces the Atlantic on the Kerry coast, offering two shore-access sites suited to beginners. Kells Bay Pier combines natural and artificial reef structures in sheltered water, while Minard Castle sits beneath the ruins of a sixteenth-century castle, with rocky gullies to explore among large storm-beach boulders. Depths across both sites are shallow and consistent, making the area a practical introduction to Atlantic diving in Ireland. Water temperatures are cool to cold in winter and reach their warmest in late summer, so a wetsuit is needed year-round. Jellyfish can be present, and surf is a variable factor at both entries.
