Budapest sits above an active thermal karst system, and that geology shapes every dive the city offers. Beneath the streets lie Molnár János Cave, a warm thermal system with water temperatures rising to around twenty-seven or twenty-eight degrees Celsius below the thermocline, and Kőbánya Mine, a flooded industrial complex running considerably colder at ten to twelve degrees Celsius. Visibility in both systems can reach up to thirty metres. Molnár János requires cave or technical certification for most of its passages and depths, which extend well beyond recreational limits; Kőbánya similarly requires overhead-environment training for its deeper sections, though some parts are accessible to recreational divers. Luppa-tó provides a calmer beginner option at shallow depths on the surface.
