The Biarritz region on France's Basque Coast holds a small set of sites that mix freshwater Pyrenean lakes with a coastal reef. Lac d'Aressy and Lake of Piau-Engaly are inland freshwater sites offering very shallow, calm conditions suited to beginners practising buoyancy, though Piau-Engaly can drop to near-freezing temperatures in colder months. Plongeoir on the Basque Coast is the saltwater option, combining natural and artificial reef structure with depths reaching thirty-five metres from a shore entry; visibility there is variable. All three sites are shore-entry and served by a small number of local operators.
