Santa Lucia sits on Cuba's northern Camagüey coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean near the Old Channel of the Bahamas. A large coral barrier reef runs parallel to the shore, sheltering sites like Playa Santa Lucia from open-ocean swells and creating conditions that suit beginners. The reef system is regarded as one of the better-preserved in the Caribbean, with visibility frequently reaching forty metres on calm days. The area draws divers primarily for its reef dives and, seasonally, for bull shark encounters near the Bay of Nuevitas between September and January. Water stays warm throughout the year, with temperatures at their peak in late summer and early autumn.
