Santa Catarina offers a varied underwater landscape shaped by three distinct sub-areas: Ilha do Arvoredo, Bombinhas, and Florianópolis. Reef dives dominate, complemented by walls, pinnacles, caves, and deliberately scuttled wrecks that now function as artificial reefs. The Cornetfish is a near-constant presence, while the Dusky Grouper, French Angelfish, Flying Gurnard, and Green Sea Turtle define the region's character. Water is warmest from December through March and coolest in July and August, which shapes both visibility and species activity. Most sites require boat access, though several shore entries in Bombinhas suit independent divers and snorkellers.

Water temperature peaks in the summer months from December through March, making this the most comfortable period for longer dives and for spotting active reef fish. Temperatures drop noticeably through the austral winter, reaching their lowest in July and August, when a thicker wetsuit is advisable. The cooler months can also bring variable conditions, particularly at exposed offshore sites such as Parcel De Torres, which is subject to currents and requires advanced skills year-round.

A good number of sites are rated for beginners, including Ilha de Itacolomis, Ilha do Coral, Parque Dos Meros, and the shallow shore-entry reefs around Bombinhas. These sites offer straightforward topography and manageable depths. Advanced divers are also well catered for, with offshore drift and pinnacle sites such as Parcel De Torres providing a more demanding experience.
Ilha do Arvoredo is the most site-rich sub-area and includes a mix of reef, wall, cave, and pinnacle dives ranging from shallow to deep. Bombinhas complements this with a strong selection of beginner-friendly sites and the only shore-entry options in the region. Florianópolis has a smaller selection of sites but still contributes to the overall variety available across Santa Catarina.
Most sites across Santa Catarina are boat-access only, and there are several dive operators based in the region to arrange trips. The exceptions are a handful of shore-entry sites in Bombinhas, including Praia do Ribeiro and Trapiche de Bombinhas, which are accessible directly from the beach and are particularly well suited to snorkellers and beginner divers.
