Bonito sits in a karst landscape in Brazil, and its dive sites are entirely freshwater: flooded cave systems, rivers, and a reservoir. Visibility is the defining feature, reaching between thirty and fifty metres in the clearest river sites during the dry season from May to September, though the reservoir at Lago do Manso runs significantly lower. Water temperatures vary by site, with the cave at Abismo Anhumas sitting as cold as seventeen degrees Celsius while shallower river sites are somewhat warmer. Access to sites is controlled through a regulated voucher system, and the depth range across the region is wide, from shallow snorkelling rivers to technical cave dives beyond thirty metres at Gruta Mimoso.
