São Jorge sits in the North Atlantic as part of the Azores archipelago, and its diving takes place entirely in open ocean conditions shaped by volcanic geology. The two sites in our database illustrate the island's range well: Ilhéu do Topo is a reef dropping to moderate depth off the eastern tip, reached by boat and best suited to intermediate divers who can handle shifting currents; Baia de Urzelina combines reef, cave, and cavern topography accessible from shore, with mild currents that make it workable for beginners and suitable for night dives. Species recorded here include loggerhead and Ridley turtles, spinetail devil rays, smooth hammerheads, conger eels, European parrotfish, and common octopus. Water is coolest in late winter and warmest from late summer into early autumn, when visibility at Ilhéu do Topo can reach thirty metres.
