Opal Reef is a Great Barrier Reef system reached by boat from Port Douglas, notable for its crescent shape, which provides shelter from prevailing winds and keeps water conditions calmer than at more exposed sites. The reef offers walls, drop-offs, and shallower reef terrain suited to beginners. Visibility is typically good, and the species list includes Napoleon wrasse, whitetip reef sharks, clownfish, parrotfish, and angelfish. Water temperatures are warmest in the wet season months and ease back through the cooler mid-year period.
