Mar del Plata offers a distinctive temperate diving and snorkelling experience built around natural reefs, artificial structures, and an exceptional cast of marine mammals. The region divides into three sub-areas: Restinga del Faro, the most site-rich zone combining natural and artificial reef; Necochea; and the deeper, advanced-oriented Banco Patria. South American Sea Lion is a very common presence across sites, while Northern Elephant Seal and Eagle Ray are regularly observed. Sites range from shallow reef suitable for snorkellers to deeper boat dives demanding advanced skills. Water is warmest from December through March.

Water temperatures follow a clear seasonal curve, peaking in the late southern-hemisphere summer months of January and February, then dropping significantly through the southern winter to their coldest around July and August. All of the top dive sites in Mar del Plata are accessed by boat, as the reefs sit offshore from the coast. There are no shore-entry dive sites listed among the main sites, so planning around boat departures is essential. Snorkellers should also expect boat-based access to the primary reef areas.
