Salto's single recorded dive site, Cantera El Terrible, is a flooded basalt quarry created during the extraction of rock for the Salto Grande dam, located in the River Plate Basin near the city of Salto. It is a shallow, shore-entry site with a consistent depth and calm water, making it a practical environment for beginners building open-water confidence. Visibility is around five metres, which rewards close-up observation of the structure and its inhabitants. The site is used by diving schools from both Uruguay and Argentina.
