Piriápolis sits on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay in the Department of Maldonado, where local waters are shaped by the influence of the Río de la Plata estuary. The four sites in our database, Vertigo, Punta Fria, Punta Colorada, and Puertito de Don Anselmo, are all shallow shore entries clustered around Punta Colorada, reaching a maximum of twenty metres but typically dived much shallower. Water temperature follows a pronounced seasonal pattern, peaking in late summer and dropping sharply through the austral winter to around twelve degrees Celsius in July and August, a thick wetsuit is essential outside the warm months. The most comfortable diving window runs from December through April, when temperatures rise into the low twenties and visibility tends to be at its best. Winter diving is possible for those equipped for the cold, but the active water-sports season broadly mirrors the summer swimming season.
