Colonia's two dive sites, Cantera Riachuelo and Cantera Ferrando, are flooded quarries in the estuarine environment of the Río de la Plata basin, near Colonia del Sacramento and Riachuelo. Both are shore-entry artificial reef sites with shallow to moderate depths, and visibility is consistently limited to around five metres, so a torch is useful. The quarry waters are warmer in summer than the open Atlantic coast, cooling through winter. Only one operator is currently active in the area. Despite the limited visibility, species recorded here include lined seahorse, broadnose and sharpnose sevengill shark, butterfly ray, gorgonian, and torpedo ray.
