Lake Sakakawea is a large reservoir in North Dakota, part of the Fort Berthold Reservoir system, and its five sites cover a broad spectrum from shallow seagrass beds to a wall at Government Bay that drops to fifty-five metres. Scoria Bay stands out for its submerged red rock formations, petrified wood, and coal veins. The Garrison Dam Tailrace draws cold water from the reservoir bottom, keeping temperatures consistently low there regardless of season. Water temperatures at the shallower sites rise to around twenty degrees Celsius in midsummer, with night diving permitted through the main season. Shore access is available at most sites.
