Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is a protected marine sanctuary best known for seasonal aggregations of manta rays and whale sharks that gather to feed on plankton. Scuba diving is strictly prohibited at the site; access is by boat and the experience is snorkelling only, managed under strict interaction rules. The bay is shallow, with most snorkelling in the upper few metres. Peak season runs from May to November, driven by the southwest monsoon and the plankton blooms it generates. Napoleon wrasse, bluefin trevally, and porcupinefish are among the other species recorded in the area.
