The John Mahn wreck functions as an artificial reef, colonised by anemones, sponges, and invertebrates, and visited by species including tompot blennies, dogfish, spiny spider crabs, and harbour seals. Water temperature sits in single figures through winter and rises to the high teens in late summer, making a drysuit the practical choice for most of the year. Strong currents and limited visibility are the norm, and the local diving community reflects this with an emphasis on technical standards.
