Styria offers a distinctive freshwater diving scene built around Alpine lakes and purpose-built artificial reefs. The two main sub-areas, Grüblsee and Erlaufsee, concentrate the bulk of sites between them, with Grüblsee leaning heavily on structured artificial installations including a themed underwater petting zoo, while Erlaufsee mixes reef dives with wall diving and reaches considerably greater depth. Most sites suit beginners, with shore access across the board. Expect to encounter Pike, Common Perch, Snail, Carp and the occasional Sturgeon. Wrecks at Schwarzlsee and the MS St. Wolfgang add variety for those seeking submerged structures.

Styria's lakes hold a solid cast of freshwater species, all observation-backed. Snail is very commonly encountered, while Pike and Common Perch appear regularly across many sites. Sun Perch, Chub, Pike Perch and Carp are seen occasionally. Wels Catfish, Alver, Western Tubenose Goby, Rainbow Trout and Sturgeon have also been recorded, making each dive a modest but real freshwater wildlife encounter.
The majority of sites in Styria are rated beginner level, and all have shore entry, which keeps logistics straightforward. Shallow artificial reefs such as Grüblsee and Tauchturm Seiersberg, along with the wreck at MS St. Wolfgang, are particularly well suited to those new to diving. Intermediate divers will find more challenge at Harry's Taucherbankerl and Lunzersee Seebad, which reach greater depth.
Grüblsee concentrates the largest number of sites and focuses on artificial reef structures, including themed installations that give dives a playful, structured character. Erlaufsee offers fewer sites but a wider variety of environments, combining reef, wall and deeper water diving. Erlaufsee's maximum depths are considerably greater, making it the better choice for divers looking to progress beyond the shallower artificial sites.
All sites across Styria use shore entry, so no boat charter is required. A number of dive operators are based in the region, including Tauchshop Piberstein/Graz, Tauchsport ScubaProfis, Tauchsport Pazifik, Dive Center Club Copacabana and several others, giving divers good options for guided dives, equipment rental and training.
