Erlaufsee sits at high altitude on the border between Styria and Lower Austria near Mariazell, and its drinking-water quality produces some of the clearest conditions among Austrian inland sites, with visibility reaching up to twenty-five metres at the best sites. Five sites cover a range of profiles, from shallow shore entries suitable for beginners through to wall dives descending past thirty metres. Cold water is a constant factor at depth regardless of season, and a drysuit or thick wetsuit is recommended. The lake holds perch, pike, rainbow trout, chub, and common perch. Operators based in the region include Harry's Tauchschule, which runs dedicated courses directly at the lake.
