Lake Mead is freshwater, so the wildlife differs markedly from coastal diving. Carp and Channel Catfish are observed very commonly across sites. Divers also encounter Large Mouth Bass, Black Crappie, Blue Gill, Green Sunfish, Rainbow Trout, and Small Mouth Bass. The experience is closer to diving an inland lake ecosystem than a reef.
Several sites are rated beginner level, including Boulder Beach, Kingman Wash, and Willow Beach. Boulder Beach in particular has a gently sloping bottom and shallow depths well suited to new divers. Black Canyon is rated intermediate and is best reserved for those with prior experience of walls and caverns.
