Angarosh and Merlo are offshore sites in Sudan's far north, reached exclusively by boat and almost always included in northern liveaboard itineraries. Angarosh, whose name translates as Mother of Sharks, is an exposed reef where the wall drops to eighty metres and strong, variable currents are the norm; it is recommended for experienced divers only. Merlo features a pinnacle, wall, and reef combination reaching fifty metres. Across the five sites in our database, topography also includes caves, drift lines, and shallow reef tops, with skill levels ranging from beginner at Gota Shambaia to advanced at Angarosh, Abington, Qita El Banna, and Merlo. Sharks recorded here include hammerhead, silvertip, whitetip, and blacktip reef species, alongside whale sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and bumphead parrotfish.

Water temperatures are at their coolest from late winter into early spring, dropping to the mid-twenties, then rise steadily to the low thirties through summer and early autumn. The cooler months coincide with the northern liveaboard season, and the lower temperatures can sharpen visibility on exposed sites like Angarosh where currents are strongest.
