The sites south of Great Slave Lake span lakes and rivers in the Northwest Territories, centred around Hay River and Fort Smith. The variety here is broader than the lake's reputation for turbidity might suggest: the Pine Point Flooded Quarries offer good visibility in abandoned open-pit mines reaching considerable depth, the West Channel Ghost Vessels are retired wooden and steel fishing boats resting in the shallows, and Louise Falls provides snorkelling in tannin-coloured pools beneath a three-tiered limestone waterfall. Shore access is standard at most sites, though conditions are cold throughout the season. Species include lake trout, pike, walleye, burbot, and perch. Skill requirements range from beginner to advanced depending on depth and current.
