Ballina lies on the New South Wales north coast, and the single site in our database, Shaws Bay, is an estuarine shore dive rather than an open-ocean reef. The bay is shallow throughout, with seagrass beds and reef structure, and experiences mild tidal currents as water moves through the rock wall from the Richmond River. It is well suited to beginners and snorkellers. Recorded species include blue buttons, Atlantic sea swallows, soldier crabs, sea stars, and bluebottles. Water is warm for most of the year, cooling only slightly in the cooler months.
